MCHS at 70: Snapshot – August 1947

Welcome back to the  blog for our continuing celebration of all things Mower County Historical Society for our 70th anniversary!  For this installment, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the “local happenings” from August 1947 and see what was going on in the community as the historical society was taking shape.

Although it can be fun to learn about the “big” and “important” events in our history, it is also really interesting to stop and just look at how people lived.  It can be comforting to see that even when it seems like everything is changing, many things were still the same 70 years ago.  People still shopped at back-to-school sales, gathered for community celebrations, followed local sports, and looked for ways to improve community safety.

Here is just a sampling of some of the local events in the Austin area in August 1947:
